5 good reasons to visit St. James’

  • All Northerners heading for Santiago de Compostela as a pilgrim pass by this church dedicated to Saint James the Major from 1495 onwards
     
  • It is the only church in this city that was founded by papal decree in 1476, later getting a chapter of canons by pope Clement XI
  • No other church in Antwerp still disposes of a rood-screen and loft, on which organ W.A. Mozart allegedly has played at his 1727 stay

  • During the Fashion Year 2000 St. James’ turned out to be the owner of the oldest liturgical vestments, going back as far as the sixteenth century

  • And of course it is also in this church that the world famous painter P.P. Rubens

    ( 1640) is buried in a chapel containing a painting of his called Our Lady with the Saints
